E-mail Print PDF

As part of the 12th Five-Year Plan, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to allocate Rs 5 billion for connecting government offices across the country via optical fibre cable (OFC), say news reports. This is to ensure that key administrative units and other essential departments are not cut off in the case of a natural disaster or other emergencies.

The secure communication backbone will connect around 5,000 government offices across the country. The secure network will be a part of the OFC network being built for the defence forces by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

The network will be built according to the security and safety specifications designed by the defence forces in consultation with security experts, and will enable the offices to be connected via email, VoIP and mobile communications, to some extent.

However, the network will not allow connections to external email and Internet servers such as Gmail, Yahoo and Skype.

The network will be routed via the National Internet Exchange of India‚Äč(NIXI).
