TRAI has brought out a report on performance indicators of the Indian telecom sector for 2005-06, including quality of service (QoS) indicators for service providers in the fixed, mobile and internet space. The report indicates that BSNL and Mahanagar Telphone Nigam Limited (MTNL) lag behind the private service providers on various QoS parameters. For the quarter ended March 2005, both companies failed to meet the TRAI benchmark on fault incidences per month per 100 telephones. BSNL in 12 circles and MTNL in Mumbai failed to meet the benchmark of providing telephones within seven days of application in their exchange areas. Private operators achieved 100 per cent compliance on these two parameters. On other parameters too, BSNL and MTNL fared worse than the private players.
