The Ministry of Communications and IT has allowed mobile number portability (MNP). The service will be launched in the four metros in the next two months, and in the rest of the country over the next 6 to 12 months. According to the guidelines issued by DoT, the country will be divided into two MNP zones consisting of 11 service areas each. There will be two metros in each zone.

The MNP service provider and mobile operators will not be allowed to have equity stake (direct or indirect) in each other's operations. The guidelines require the applicants to have a minimum paid-up capital of Rs 100 million and a net worth of Rs 1 billion on the date of application. The government is likely to grant MNP licences to two service providers soon.
