BSNL is likely to float two tenders of Rs 20 billion each for rolling out Wi-Max services. While the first tender for launching WiMax in rural India will be floated by end 2007, the one for urban India will be floated by January 2008. According to BSNL, the first project will be funded from the Universal Service Obligation Fund and will initially cover 25,000 villages. The project will also offer broadband connections through the Wi-Max network in about 40,000 primary and secondary schools by 2008. In addition, BSNL will set up 50,000 Wi-Max kiosks across the rural areas.

The second tender, which will cover over 70 cities, will be funded by BSNL itself.
