In his current role as vice president of marketing at Linode, Blair Lyon leads the company’s branding, advertising and go-to-market strategies. An advocate of a more open, independent cloud computing market, Lyon believes that this market should be built upon a foundation of open source technologies and be free of vendor lock-in. “Our goal is to help others transform their businesses more easily and affordably by leveraging the cloud without all of the trappings of traditional hyperscale providers and the complexity, bureaucracy and cost they bring with them,” he says.

According to Lyon, as data traffic is increasing at an unprecedented rate, enterprises in India are gradually moving from a “cloud-first” to a “cloud-only” approach. Further, as India races towards becoming a major global hub for developers and start-ups, there is a need for simpler and more affordable alternatives to the hyperscale cloud. Moreover, as concerns surrounding data ownership are growing, data localisation is becoming a top priority for governments across the world, and India is no exception. “The cloud will play a large role in advanced technologies such as edge computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning – areas where our next-generation network and product portfolio will help customers take advantage of these exciting and powerful new technologies.”

A large part of Lyon’s career has been spent focusing on transforming traditional business models through digital technology. He recounts streamlining the global sourcing model for the apparel/textile industry as one of his most memorable experiences. “It was an audacious undertaking, terribly disruptive and hugely transformative for an industry that produces one of the most widely used products in the world. We were able to reduce product sample time from months to just days and cut the product-to-market time by an incredible 75 per cent.”

As for his management style, Lyon believes part of his job is to help individuals grow their personal brands through functional leadership and alignment with the company’s corporate goals and mission. “It’s about creating a world-class employee experience because to deliver a fantastic customer experience, you have to have a fantastic employee experience,” he says.

Lyon likes to spend his time outside of work with his family, which includes his wife, a 14-year-old son, an 11-year-old daughter and a Corgi dog named Lexi. He also likes to travel to historical places and coach start-up companies.
