DCC approves infrastructure projects worth Rs 85 billion; allows in-building access for multiple operators

The Digital Communications Commission (DCC) has approved various telecom infrastructure projects worth around Rs 85 billion. The projects include laying of fibre in all the villages of Tamil Nadu under the BharatNet project at a cost of Rs 18.15 billion.

Further, DCC has also approved in-building access by telecom service providers (TSPs) which will allow them to share infrastructure. To this end, the Department of Telecommunications will request the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to issue suitable guidelines to owners or residential welfare associations (RWAs) to provide access to buildings to all TSPs in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner.

DCC has also approved installation of 1,917 mobile towers to provide 4G connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh (for 2,215 villages) and two districts of Assam (763 villages) with an investment of Rs 25 billion. The investment will be funded undertaken by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF). In Meghalaya, a plan to erect 1,593 mobile towers has been approved at an investment of Rs 21 billion.
