The expenditure finance committee of the finance ministry has cleared the NITI Aayog’s proposal worth Rs 70 billion for launching a national artificial intelligence (AI) programme.

The amount would be spent till 2024-25 to set up a national AI centre among other things. Further, it would also include formation of a task force under principal scientific advisor K. Vijay Raghavan, which would identify projects and initiatives in which to implement AI technology.

The proposal for setting up the AI centre was being delayed because of a long-standing tiff between NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on which department will be anchoring the project.

NITI Aayog has been requesting for funds worth Rs 75 billion since past three years to set up an AI framework. However, the MeitY had agreed to implement the programme within Rs 4.7-4.8 billion.
