Jio's bundled broadband plans may leave DTH firms vulnerable says Bank of America Merrill Lynch

According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch report Reliance Jio's recently announced bundled broadband services plans, under its offerings, JioFiber, may leave direct-to-home (DTH) firms ‘vulnerable’, and work out to be ‘neutral to slight negative’ for Bharti Airtel, resulting from the rise in competition among corporate and home internet space that it has caused.

Further, the report added that there might not be any direct impact on broadcasters. However impact on subscription revenue could be felt if DTH/MSOs (multiple-system operator) revenues are affected. The impact on Airtel is anticipated to be limited as low fixed broadband penetration and large greenfield opportunities persists.

The long-term impact would be on ad spends, mostly on advertisers focusing more on over-the-top advertisements and spend more on producing quality content to compete with Amazon, Netflix etc.

The pricing of home broadband for Hathway, Den, GTPL Hathway remains Rs 350-400 per month, however they offer lower speeds of 50 Mbps, while RIL is promising a minimum speed of 100 Mbps at a minimum rate of Rs 700, the report added. Adoption of the offering can be gradual and might take 4-5 years.
