The expenditure finance committee (EFC) of the Delhi government has given its approval to the ‘Hotspot’ model to provide free internet to residents of the capital. Further, EFC has approved a sum of Rs 990 million to set up about 11,000 hotspots across the city while THE Public Works Department (PWD) has been assigned the responsibility to create the free Wi-Fi system in the city.

The proposal is likely to be put before Delhi cabinet soon, after which the PWD will release its tenders for inviting telcos to provide this facility.

According to a Delhi government official, each of the 70 assembly constituencies will have around 100 hotspots. Further the routers are going to be installed at prominent locations such as mohalla clinics, dispensaries, parks, markets and buildings. Besides this, 4,000 hotspots will be installed at bus queue shelters.

Further, the Wi-Fi signals will be available within a radius of about 50 metres from where the router is installed, catering 15GB of free data per month to every user.

Along with this development, EFC has also approved the project to install an additional 140,000 CCTV cameras in the city.
