Cost of data breach in India increase by 7.29 percent between 2018 and 2019, says study by IBM Security

According to a study by IBM Security, the average total cost of a data breach in India has increased by 7.29 per cent from Rs 119 million in 2018 to Rs 128 million in 2019. Further, the mean time to identify the data breach has increased from 188 to 221 days whereas to contain them has decreased from 78 to 77 days, the study said.

The major cause identified for 51 per cent of the data breaches was malicious or criminal attacks whereas human error led to 22 per cent of the attacks while 27 per cent of the attacks were caused due to system glitch.

As per the study, the per capita cost per lost or stolen record in India is Rs 5,019 which represents an increase of 9.76 per cent from 2018. By per capita cost, the top sectors which are being affected due to data breach are industrial, pharmaceuticals, technology, services and financial sectors.
