The Group of Ministers (GoM) constituted for the revival of state-run telecom operators Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) held its first meeting on July 16, 2019 and discussed measures for the revival of the loss-making operators.

According to industry sources, the GoM is led by home minister Amit Shah and includes the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, law and telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad along with telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan, additional secretary Anshu Prakash and BSNL chairman and managing director P. K. Purwar, who are learnt to have attended the meeting.

This is the second time a GoM has been constituted for revival of the two ailing state-run operators.

Earlier, BSNL and MTNL had approached the Department of Telecommunications for immediate help to deal with financial stress, which has aggravated due to the tariff war triggered by the entry of Reliance Jio. Further, high employee cost has added to the woes of both the firms. Moreover, BSNL and MTNL have also approached the government for granting a voluntary retirement scheme package to their employees.
