The government of Tamil Nadu is planning to lay an optical fibre network spanning 55,000 km under the BharatNet and TamilNet projects. The OFC network would be implemented by the Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation Limited (TANFINET).

According to the government, the network will ensure at least 1 Gbps connectivity to 12,524 village panchayats, 528 town panchayats, 121 municipalities and 15 corporations, which would be a game changer for the people by enabling them to do various official works from the comfort of their homes.

Further, the government has selected six villages in Tirunelveli, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Salem, Karur and Virudhunagar districts to implement the first phase of the Amma e-Gramam project at a cost of Rs 16.2 million. The project would provide tele-medicine, tele-education, Wi-Fi hotspots, skill development and digital knowledge services for the benefit of people.

Moreover, free internet facility would be provided to 366 government higher secondary schools in educationally backward blocks at an estimated cost of Rs 90.6 million. Meanwhile, the government has sanctioned Rs 12.3 million for implementing it in 50 government higher secondary schools through Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Limited (TACTV).
