Reliance Jio challenges Delhi high court’s order on MNP fee in Supreme Court

Reliance Jio has challenged a Delhi high court order that dismissed its appeal against an earlier judgement that quashed the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) decision to reduce a key mobile number portability (MNP) fee in the Supreme Court.

In April 2019, the operator had appealed against the Delhi high court’s March 8, 2019, judgement that had rejected a 17-month old TRAI regulation which slashed the per port transaction charge (PPTC) for MNP from Rs 19 to Rs 4. The high court had quashed TRAI’s regulation, terming it as illegal and unsustainable.

However, Jio has recently filed a special leave petition (SLP) against the order in the Supreme Court. According to industry sources, Jio has moved the apex court because it is impacted by the Delhi high court’s March 2019 judgement as it is a payer of PPTC.

The apex court is likely to hear the matter by end July 2019.
