TRAI extends deadline for submitting comments on its paper on reviewing interconnection

News , June 26, 2019

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the deadline for submitting comments and counter comments on its consultation paper on reviewing the regulatory framework for interconnection.

The last date for submitting comments has been extended from June 27, 2019 to July 4, 2019 while the deadline for counter comments has been extended from July 11, 2019 to July 18, 2019.

The consultation paper was released in May to reassess ways to do away with entry barriers for new players, while reducing the cost of operations for existing companies and giving them more flexibility.

As per TRAI, a large number of points of interconnect (PoIs) are presently required by fixed-line operators to handle a part of the telephony traffic, resulting in inefficient use of resources and this situation needs to be corrected. The simplification of the interconnection system for fixed-line networks shall help expand fixed-line broadband connections besides shielding the interests of  service providers and consumers.
