The Digital Communications Commission (DCC), the apex decision-making body of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has cleared the norms for 5G trials in India. Further, DCC has decided that spectrum for 5G trials will be allotted for one year, which will be extendable for a one-time fee of Rs 50 billion.

Furthermore, the telecom panel has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to review its recommendations on the 5G spectrum sale set to auction 8,644 MHz of airwaves, and make available a higher amount of spectrum. Moreover, the panel has asked TRAI to approve rollout of spectrum for 5G trials in 100 days and ensure competition in the sector while reviewing its recommendations.

TRAI is expected to revert with its reviewed recommendations on licensing, the amount of airwaves, and other aspects related to enabling experimental spectrum for conducting 5G trials by July, 2019.

Meanwhile, the government is contemplating to arrive at a calibrated decision on the participation of Chinese giant Huawei in 5G trials and development of 5G ecosystem in the country.
