The government’s BharatNet program has been able to make only 119,000 gram panchayats (GPs) service-ready against a target of 250,000 GPs, missing yet another deadline of March 2019.

As per Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), only 95 per cent of the work under Phase I has been completed. Moreover, 18,000 kilometres of fibre has been replaced during Phase I as against a targeted 50,000 kilometres.

The delay has been attributed to various issues that principally include right of way challenges across states including forest areas.

Meanwhile, under Phase II of the project, 40 per cent of the detailed project reports (DPR) have not been approved yet.
