India registers decline of 1.82 per cent in subscriber base during March 2019, says TRAI

As per the telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of telephone subscribers in India declined from 1,205.40 million at the end of February 2019 to 1,183.51 million at the end of March 2019, thereby witnessing a monthly decline rate of 1.82 per cent. Further, urban subscriptions declined from 675.24 million to 669.16 million and the rural subscription declined from 530.16 million to 514.35 million during the same period. Further, the overall tele-density in India declined from 91.86 per cent during end February 2019 to 90.11 per cent during end March 2019.

The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA and LTE) declined from 1,183.68 million at the end of February 2019 to 1,161.81 million at the end of March 2019, thereby registering a monthly decline rate of 1.85 per cent. Further, wireline subscribers declined from 21.72 million to 21.70 million during the period.

Among operators, Reliance Jio witnessed net additions to the tune of 9.4 million in its subscriber base as of March 31, 2019. This has resulted to an increase in subscriber base for the operator, which stood at 306.7 million, as of March 2019. However, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Limited have reported a decline in subscriber base of 15.1 million and 14.5 million respectively, resulting in a total subscriber base of 394.8 million for Vodafone Idea and 325.2 million for Airtel.

However, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 550.24 million during end February 2019 to 563.31 million during end March 2019, registering a monthly growth rate of 2.37 per cent.
