According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi continued to lead the smartphone market in the quarter ended March 2019 with a 29 per cent share even with a two per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline in shipments.

Samsung came in second with a 23 per cent market share during the quarter, down from 26 per cent in corresponding quarter last year. Interestingly, Vivo grabbed third place and managed to double its market share to 12 per cent during the quarter.

As per the report, overall smartphone shipments in India grew four per cent YoY to 31 million units. The market which started off slowly after the festive season gained momentum later in the quarter. Overall growth has been slower than expected owing to the fact that some major brands had piled up inventory during the festive period last quarter. In fact, the quarter saw all major brands expand their offline footprint to gain market share.

Chinese vendors accounted for a record 66 per cent market share during the quarter. Smartphone volumes for Chinese brands grew 20 per cent YoY, attributable primarily to the growth in volumes of Vivo, Realme and Oppo.
