Jio leads wireless broadband market with 56 per cent share, says ICRA

According to ICRA, Reliance Jio has occupied the leader’s position in the wireless broadband market with 56 per cent share. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel possess 21 per cent market share each.

ICRA also pointed out that the subscriber base of Bharti Airtel reduced by 0.05 million, while that of Vodafone Idea reduced by 5.79 million in February 2019. As a result, Vodafone Idea's subscriber base stood at 409.4 million, Bharti Airtel's at 340.3 million and Reliance Jio’s at 297.2 million as of February 2019.

The wireless subscriber base in the country stood at 1,183.7 million in February 2019, an addition of 1.7 million subscribers over the previous month, with the wireless broadband subscriber base witnessing a growth of 2 per cent during the period under consideration. As per ICRA, the growth in the total number of wireless subscriber was primarily led by Reliance Jio, which added 7.8 million new customers during the month.

ICRA highlighted that Reliance Jio added 90 million active subscribers to its network during 11 months in financial year 2019, taking its active subscriber base to 250 million. Reliance Jio’s active subscriber market share increased from 23.5 per cent in January 2019 to 24.4 per cent in February 2019. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea’s market share decreased from 37.6 per cent in January 2019 to 36.9 per cent in February 2019, while that of Bharti Airtel reduced from 32.4 per cent to 32.1 per cent during the same period.

Nonetheless, Vodafone Idea continues to lead the market of active subscribers.
