Syniverse approaches telco clients to recover porting fee arrears

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service provider, Syniverse Technologies is requesting all its telecom clients to hold consultations in its bid to recover porting fee arrears worth around Rs 600 million. The move comes after the Delhi High Court recently rejected the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) regulation of reducing a key porting levy.

Syniverse's clients include Vodafone Idea Limited, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL).

Earlier, in January 2018, the TRAI had issued a regulation, wherein it reduced the per port transaction charge (PPTC) by nearly 80 per cent from 19 per cent to 4 per cent. This regulation was challenged by MNP service providers such as Syniverse and MNP Interconnection as their revenues declined.

The revised PPTC invoices will be computed based on 19 per cent per transaction retrospectively from February 2018, instead of the TRAI mandated 4 per cent per transaction.

Syniverse's efforts to recover its porting fee arrears, comes at a time when the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is renewing its MNP service provider permit by another 10 years till March 19, 2029.
