The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Sarvesh Singh as the new chairman and managing director (CMD) of the Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL).

As per a recent notification released by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Singh will hold a joint secretary-level position under the Department of Telecommunications. Singh is an Indian Railways Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) 1988-batch officer.

Earlier the government had let go of Sanjay Singh who was holding the position of Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) administrator and CMD of BBNL. He has been succeeded by Bihar cadre officer Ansuli Arya as the new USOF administrator.

Following this, the government has also split the portfolio. The decision has come on the backdrop of underachievement of BharatNet program undertaken by the special purpose vehicle (SPV) BBNL that aims to connect 250,000 gram panchayats or village blocks with high-speed Internet by March 31, 2019.
