Xiaomi maintains top position in Indian smartphone market in April-June quarter, says IDC

According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), Xiaomi maintained its top position in the Indian smartphone market with a share of 29.9 per cent in the quarter ended June, 2018. Samsung occupied the second spot with a share of 23.9 per cent in the same quarter.

China's Vivo and Oppo stood at thrid and fourth positions with 12.6 per cent and 7.6 per cent share respectively. Another Chinese brand Transsion stood at the fifth position with a 5 per cent market share in the quarter under consideration.

As per the report, Xiaomi's shipments grew by 10 per cent and grew more than two fold annually, which could be attributed to a strong online presence and growing offline reach.

Samsung experienced a 21 per cent Year-over-year (YoY) growth primarily on the back of its newly launched "infinity" series model. The brand continues to have strong shipments of its successful low-end models, while its high-end segment saw incremental demand along with cash back offers and financing schemes across channels.

During the quarter, smartphone companies shipped a total of 33.5 million units to India during, resulting in a 20 per cent year-over-year (YoY) growth. According to IDC, this is largely due to a slew of online exclusive launches and strong shipments by offline heavy vendors on the back of high promotional activities and channel schemes.

However, in terms of market share there is a lot of consolidation at the top end.

In the online segment, Huawei climbed to the second position with an all-time high of 8 per cent share in the online segment primarily due to strong shipments of its Honor branded phones.

On the offline front, the growth was driven by Vivo which had strong shipments during the quarter on the back of high decibel marketing campaigns

The premium end of the market grew two times year-over-year (YoY) mainly due to continued strong shipments of Samsung Galaxy S9 series and OnePlus 6.

The feature phone market remained resilient with shipments of 44.0 million units in the second quarter, seeing a growth of 29 per cent over June 2017 with Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) being the leader in this segment.
