Cabinet approves Rs 12.5 billion as subsidy support to BSNL for operating rural landline connections

The Union Cabinet has cleared Rs 12.5 billion subsidy for state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited as compensation for the deficit incurred for operating rural landline connections installed before April 1, 2002. The subsidy support extended to BSNL will be funded through the Universal Service Obligation Fund.
BSNL had applied for Rs 20 billion as subsidy for supporting rural wireline connections.
