Uninor awards $300 million network expansion deal to Huawei

Norway-based telecom operator, Uninor, has awarded a three-year 2G network expansion and transformation contract worth around $300 million to Huawei. Under the contract, Huawei will transform around 24,000 sites of Uninor in six circles, namely, Uttar Pradesh (East), Uttar Pradesh (West), Bihar (including Jharkhand), Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Uninor had earlier announced that it will introduce sophisticated services using 4G long term evolution (LTE) technology. The operator has recently conducted the LTE trials using 1800 MHz band. Through the contract with Huawei, Uninor is also making its networks 4G ready in the six circles.

Uninor has so far been working with Nokia Networks for 2G network deployments in the country. Nokia Networks is currently deploying network for Uninor’s Assam circle which is expected to start operations in 2015.
