Shashin Devsare, Executive Director, Karbonn Mobiles

Shashin Devsare has set himself a challenging goal: to make Karbonn the number one mobile brand in the country amidst stiff competition from international companies. To this end, he has been working to devise a strong business strategy that includes bringing the best available technology to the country at rational prices while establishing a dedicated distribution channel. As executive director of Karbonn, Devsare is in charge of company strategy for marketing, international business and mobile ecosystem development.

Devsare has two decades of experience in strategic business planning, brand equity development, channel management, profit and loss management, and strategic account management. He started his career in the advertising industry, working with Ogilvy & Mather in 1994. He then moved to Philips Consumer Communications, where he worked for about five years before joining Samsung India Electronics. At Samsung, Devsare was responsible for laying the foundation of the company’s GSM and CDMA mobile phones business in India.

Devsare believes that in the coming years, telecom vendors will be in dynamic competition to attract consumers with newer technologies and affordable pricing strategies. “By coming together, mobile players and telecom partners will keep the consumer engaged with innovative services and offerings, which will allow them to experience fast internet and networking, and give them access to the best hardware devices,” says Devsare.

While handling challenging assignments, Devsare has seen that motivating his team and providing them the right guidance have helped him bring valuable changes to the organisation and achieve tough targets. He is open to new ideas and independent thinking from his team members and believes in establishing an open discussion for better decision-making. He also makes it a point to recognise the skills of his team members and utilise their strengths to execute tasks efficiently.

An economics graduate from Delhi University, Devsare also has an MBA from Pune University and has done a course in finance and accounting for marketers and entrepreneurs conducted by the University of Singapore. He has also trained in advanced selling, negotiations and account management techniques in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. According to Devsare, it is this diverse educational background that has helped build his expertise and provided a global outlook to his marketing approach.
