Praveen Rajpal, chief executive officer (CEO), Handygo Technologies, lives by the mantra “don’t fear to dream.” An MBA from IMT Ghaziabad, like most of his contemporaries he too aspired to be an entrepreneur. “My determination, perseverance and foresightedness  spurred me to get into internet and mobile technology,” says Rajpal.

It was his zest for challenges that inspired Rajpal to establish Handygo Technologies in 2000. Today, the company is one of the leading providers of mobile value-added services (VAS) and caters to segments such as entertainment, rural, education and health care. With the growing uptake of 3G services, he is keen on expanding the company’s presence in the field of mobile commerce.

Rajpal believes that challenges lead to innovation. According to him, frequent regulatory changes by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India have actually wiped out 70 per cent of the VAS market. However, despite these challenges, Rajpal is upbeat about the future of the VAS market and foresees growing demand for creative and innovative VAS products that are both, informative and entertaining.

Handygo Technologies has a global launch plan to introduce one of its flagship products and an IVR-based solution, “Behtar Zindagi”, in countries such as Dubai, Brazil, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria. The solution aims to empower the farming and allied communities by providing them with basic information regarding agriculture, livestock, commodity prices, weather forecast, coastal and inland fisheries, m-education, health and rural finance, among others.

One of the other key areas of interest for Rajpal is increasing data penetration in the country. He comments, “With online users set to grow by

3 billion globally in the next few years and two-thirds of these users living in developing countries, there is a whole new market waiting to be explored by operators as well as VAS providers. The way forward for the telecom industry is to make high speed data and devices accessible to users in Tier II and Tier III markets.”

As CEO, Rajpal is focused on building a cohesive work environment. He considers his team as his biggest strength and enjoys celebrating with them whenever the company achieves a milestone.

A self-confessed foodie, Rajpal says that he enjoys exploring different restaurants in and around Delhi. Apart from this, he loves spending time with his family.
