As head of operations and maintenance (O&M), Viom Networks, Mayank Mittal spearheads a multifunctional, pan-Indian team. “Compared to conventional telecom infrastructure companies, we have adopted a more holistic view. Viom Networks’ O&M function has four distinct divisions. As part of our core network function, the team is responsible for infrastructure performance, customer and vendor interaction, on-ground services and issue resolution. The infrastructure vertical ensures that our equipment at each site is functioning optimally. It also oversees asset maintenance, repairs and material planning. The estate management group deals with rentals, repayments, agreements, etc.,” he says.

Aside from these functions, Mittal is excited about how the energy vertical at Viom Networks is shaping up. “This vertical is becoming a full-fledged strategic business unit that is responsible for managing energy at the sites. We are currently working on a range of new technologies and initiatives to make energy availability and consumption at our sites ultra-efficient,” he says.

So, what advantages has the company gained from this approach? “The holistic approach spread across the value chain ensures that we provide best-in-industry service offerings to our customers – the operators. We know that if we achieve efficiencies, the operators and, ultimately, the end-users will benefit from it.”

With regard to future trends in the telecom space, he says, “I am excited about new enablers that are making their presence felt in the form of a tower operations centre and master data management. These will add significantly to our capability to support our customers in the most efficient way possible,” he says.

Mittal brings to Viom over 23 years of experience in the telecom domain. An alumnus of BITS, his areas of expertise include R&D in radio frequency technology, very high frequency technology, GSM, CDMA and telecom infrastructure. He has extensive experience in project planning and operations in both start-ups and established companies. Prior to Viom, he worked with companies like TTSL, Bharti Airtel, Datacom and Escotel.

Mittal likes to spend quality time outside of work with his family. He enjoys reading fiction and is passionate about cricket. A man of simple interests, he says that whenever he finds time, he enjoys going on a long drive as he finds it therapeutic. “But above all,” he says, “I love to cook for my family and enjoy every moment of the process.”
