He Shiyou is a long distance runner. In fact, it is his belief in the marathon principle that has seen him meet tough business targets. Like a marathon runner, he likes to meticulously plan each aspect of his work and then execute it with a runner’s grace, with full energy and dedication. He has applied the marathon principle in his business management plans and used it to accomplish challenging tasks.

With 17 years of industry experience, Shiyou, executive director, ZTE Corporation, has in-depth knowledge of telecom R&D and sales. He joined the company in 1993 and rose steadily, holding positions like chief engineer at its research institute in Nanjing, deputy director at the research institute in Shanghai, and vice-president of ZTE, in charge of product development, marketing and administration.

Among his most memorable assignments was the expansion of the company’s terminal business. “I was appointed senior vice-president and executive vice-president of the firm in 2004, and was responsible for the company’s terminal business. I take great pride in leading the expansion of the company’s terminal products at an annual growth rate of over 30 per cent,” he says.

He also recalls his close association with ZTE’s handset team to develop what he calls the “operator customisation” model, which taps ZTE’s competitive advantages and helps adapt to market situations. His understanding of evolving trends and the competitive global handset market helped him share vital inputs for the model with his team.

During Shiyou’s tenure, ZTE became the world’s sixth largest handset vendor and the second largest data card vendor. He has also contributed to its expanding footprint in geographies like Europe, North America and Japan.

Shiyou attaches importance to ZTE’s innovative handset technology, industry design, quality and after-sales service, and identifies these as key factors for growth. Over the years, ZTE’s handset team has won global recognition and received several awards. ZTE has an Inspection Free Certificate for Handset Export making it China’s first handset maker that does not require its products to be inspected prior to exports.

Shiyou has a master’s degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and has majored in electromagnetics and microwaves. He likes to devote his spare time to teaching and has been a visiting professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Department of Radio Electronics since 2004.
