Patrick Allainguillaume has a simple but effective management style. He believes in leading by example and combines it with a dash of team spirit. “I believe in a transparent and inclusive leadership style. Employees need to be empowered to innovate and take decisions to enhance the business. I encourage my team members by giving them the space to grow,” he comments.

That apart, he is not afraid to get his hands dirty if the situation demands, a trait he attributes to his upbringing. “I have been raised in Brittany, France, and we are known to be stern and persistent in what we believe. Sometimes it has led me to take charge on my own instead of delegating work to my teams and colleagues, which may have been a better option,” he says.

As head of Mahindra Comviva’s global market unit, this seems like a viable approach. In this capacity, he is responsible for devising and implementing the company’s global sales strategy. Although he joined the VAS major only in October, he already has plans in place to expand its portfolio of solutions.

Allainguillaume started his career in Hewlett-Packard’s sales division and thereafter held executive positions at various global VAS companies in the sales, worldwide support and operations segments. “I also acquired expertise in venture capital, business strategy and developing organisations internationally,” he says.

Commenting on his most memorable assignments, he recalls the time he was managing Ericsson’s messaging services organisation and deploying the first multimedia messaging service in Europe. Equally memorable was his stint at Openwave, when it signed its first multi-million dollar managed services contract with a South African mobile operator. “In all these opportunities, we innovated, worked as a cross-functional team and shared our expertise and passion for success with the customer,” he says.

So, what are the targets before him in his current job? “My primary aim is to contribute to the company’s growth as it expands overseas,” he says. “Mahindra Comviva is the strategic partner of many mobile operators located across the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Americas. The aim is to leverage the company’s experience and global presence so as to strengthen its positioning.”

Allainguillaume describes himself as “a very active and eclectic person. I like to be constantly on the go. Some of my interests are international culture, ballet, theatre, sports (especially tennis, sailing and golf) and also do-it-yourself projects.”
