For Sumit Singh, head of quality, India region, Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN), the last two years have been particularly exciting professionally. “In 2011, the company introduced a strategy focused on renewal and transformation. Implementing these new practices was challenging but very satisfying,” he says. “The aim was to position the company as the strongest, most innovative and highest quality mobile broadband and services player. Quality was one of the three key pillars of this strategy, the others being focus and innovation.” Once the strategy was in place, NSN launched several best practices to ensure delivery of quality products, services and solutions. These included the fault prediction model, the continuous improvement framework, failure modes and effects analysis and test automation.

Not one to rest on his laurels though, Singh is now gearing up to meet new challenges. “The telecom sector is facing twofold challenges. Voice-based services are nearing saturation and data is still to witness substantial uptake. There is also a lot of uncertainty with regard to mergers and acquisitions, spectrum, network security, etc.” As a result, operators are pulling the reins on capex spending. “In this context, the head of quality at any vendor has to become more focused on the customer and ensure that top quality products and services are offered. It also implies that the company must assist customers in resol-ving network issues faster and more efficiently,” he says.

To accomplish these and other tasks, Singh relies on a consultative style of management. “I believe in leading from the front and delegating assignments while ensuring that I mentor and coach my team to ensure they meet their targets,” he says.

Of course, several years of working in various sectors helps. Singh has 16 years of work experience under his belt in the electronics, telecom and automotive industries. His areas of expertise include quality assurance, services and supplier quality, outsourcing, process enhancements, and supply chain and manpower management.

He joined NSN as quality manager, site engineering, India, and rose steadily in the organisation to his current position. Prior to NSN, he worked at Motorola India as quality manager, outsourcing and supplier development. He earlier worked at Asahi India Glass Limited, Munjal Showa and Jai Gopal Industries.

Singh unwinds by playing cricket, participating in off-road motorsports and spending time with his family.
