C.R. Rao, who recently took over as chief operating officer (COO) of Sify Technologies, is responsible for all the operational and delivery functions across Sify’s multiple businesses, and for driving company growth. Prior to this role, he was vice-president, strategy, administration and human resources with the company. He has worked with Sify Technologies for the past four years.

Talking about the company’s future road map, Rao says, “Sify has tremendous potential and value that needs to be unlocked. We have a presence in different verticals such as IT, telecom, software services and data centres. We are focusing on leveraging all these components and strategically positioning the company to lead it in to the next phase of growth.” Going forward, Sify Technologies will focus on offering next-generation technologies, which would help the company play a greater role in facilitating network integration for its clients.

According to Rao, the IT and telecom industry will witness exponential growth in the coming years, fuelled by data services. This will lead to greater demand for innovative applications, especially in the video space.

Rao is a graduate in law and commerce from Andhra University and a postgraduate in business administration from Osmania University. He practised law from 1987 to 1989, following which he moved to the aviation sector and was associated with companies such as Delta Tubes and Bobba Aviation Services-GSA Lufthansa Cargo. After a successful stint of over 16 years in the aviation sector, he moved to the IT and telecom industry in 2009.

Rao believes that people are the biggest assets of a company and all possible efforts should be made to increase employee productivity. “I like interacting with people and reaching out to them in challenging times,” he says.

Despite having spent the major part of his career in the aviation industry, Rao finds his stint at Sify his most challenging assignment so far. “I had led the strategic planning function at Sify Technologies for just six months when I was asked to take over HR as well. This was a huge task and responsibility. However, being a people’s person, I handled this role successfully. At the end of the day, it is all about managing people and gelling with them.”

Outside of work, Rao likes to spend time with his friends and family, comprising his wife and two sons. He also enjoys watching movies.
